Over the last few years Children’s Services in Somerset have undertaken training in Motivational Interviewing, which looks at how we engage and communicate with families to empower them to make positive change in their lives.
Aims
To provide an overview of the key principles and concepts of Motivational Interviewing in the context of wider safeguarding partnership agencies.
Objectives
Participants will have been offered the opportunity to:
- Gain an awareness of Motivational Interviewing as an approach and how this may differ from other approaches.
- Become aware that ambivalence is a normal part of the process of change and how we approach conversations can influence whether someone becomes more or less open to changing.
- Notice the importance of the core conditions of person-centred practice for MI conversations (The Spirit of MI).
- Gain understanding of the importance of language in MI conversations – reinforcing Change Talk and softening Sustain Talk.
- Understand the importance of eliciting the service user’s own ideas about change and resisting the urge to fix/solve the problem as we see it.
- Brief practice some of the skills of MI in a protective environment.
It would be essential for staff to have access to ongoing development/supervision in order to embed and be able to use the skills.
Please note - this training is unsuitable or available to members of Somerset Council's Children's Services who should instead attend the 3 day MI training - Booked through TLC.
