Motivational Interviewing - Engaging and Supporting Change

Over the last few years Children’s Services in Somerset have undertaken training in Motivational Interviewing, which looks at how we engage and communicate with families to empower them to make positive change in their lives.

Aims

To provide an overview of the key principles and concepts of Motivational Interviewing in the context of wider safeguarding partnership agencies.

Learning Outcomes:

 Participants will have been offered the opportunity to:

· Learn and experience the fundamental spirit and 4 processes of MI

· Witness examples of adherent MI through live, audio and video demonstrations

· Learn and strengthen, through practice, empathic counselling skills essential to MI (OARS)

· Understand and practice the guiding aspects of MI, becoming aware of and being able to respond and influence motivation for change

· Directly experience the MI approach in a protective environment

· Consider the application of MI in childcare and adult social work settings

· Gain an awareness of the extensive literature supporting MI as an evidence base in working with complexity and facilitating change.

It would be essential for staff to have access to ongoing development/supervision in order to embed and be able to use the skills.

This course will be run over 3 dates at the following locations:

31st March 9.30-4.30 -Yeovil Town Football club

1st April - Yeovil Town Football Club

6th May  9.30-4.30pm - Yeovil Town Football Club
