This is a link to the official Homeoffice e-Learning relating to preventing radicalisation in children & young people.
The Prevent duty became law back in 2015. This is a duty on all schools and registered early years providers to have due regard to preventing people being drawn into terrorism. In order to protect children in your care, you must be alert to any reason for concern in the child’s life at home or elsewhere. This includes awareness of the expression of extremist views.
The government training courses are designed, and are appropriate for, staff working in sectors covered by the Prevent duty. These include education, health, local authorities, police, prisons, probation and youth justice. Other sectors that are not covered may also complete this training. You do not have to complete all the courses.You should refer to your organisation's training requirements to determine which courses are appropriate for you.
This course takes 30 to 40 minutes to complete.
Who it’s for
This course is for anyone new to Prevent. If you’re unsure what Prevent is and what signs to look for when it comes to risks of radicalisation, awareness is the first course in our Prevent duty training.
It’s for anyone working with members of the public on a regular basis, for example those who work in education, health, probation, police and local authorities. Members of the public who would like to learn more about how to identify behaviours that cause concern may also complete it.
Course overview
This course will give you an introduction to the Prevent duty, the forms of extremism and terrorism threatening the UK and develop your knowledge around the risks of radicalisation and your supportive role.
When you have completed this course, you will be able to:
- describe what Prevent is and why it is important
- understand how it applies in your role
- identify the difference between radicalisation, extremism and terrorism
- apply the notice, check, share procedure

Radicalisation
Radicalisation is the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and extremist ideologies. If you are worried someone close to you is becoming radicalised act early and seek help. The sooner you reach out, the quicker the person you care about can be protected from being groomed and exploited by extremists.
Police forces across the country have specially trained Prevent officers who work with professionals in health, education, local authorities and charities, as well as faith and community groups to help vulnerable people move away from extremism. They are here to listen and offer help and advice. Receiving support is voluntary.
Friends and family are best placed to spot the signs, so trust your instincts and share your concerns in confidence.
They can help if you act early. You won’t be wasting police time and you won’t ruin lives, but you might save them.

Also being launched is a National Prevent advice line for friends/family/community members to call through 0800 011 3764. This number will be staffed by Prevent teams to ensure the advice being given is appropriate and consistent.
